Heartbeats

It's been said that the Vice President is a heartbeat away from the Presidency. With Cheney's ticker, I guess that makes Denny Hastert something like, well, more or less a heartbeat away from the Presidency. And it's anybody's guess how good Denny's heart is.

An overweight, diabetic overeater? Hmmm. Probably lacks both the pump and the pipes to pass a rigorous physical with a clean bill of health.

Which is something, for a guy who today is saying former Gov. Jim Edgar should run for governor again against Blago-Boy... and make his announcement soon.

I'm no fan of Blagojevich, but I think prodding Edgar (who declined to run against Obama, based on concerns for his health, after the Illinois GOP dumped Jack Ryan) shows what a joke the Illlinois Republicans are. Is that the best they can do?

A second punch line in this joke is that, even if it were an option to have Hastert (the state's most powerful Republican) run, there's no way he'll win it. Both Hastert and the entire House have something less than a miserable approval rating.
